Domestic violence can impact anyone's life

Whether in California or another state, there is no one social status or income bracket that can predict whether abuse will take place in the home. In fact,  it's estimated that one in four women will be harmed by domestic violence in their lifetime. The figure for men is one in seven.

Not all domestic abuse stories make national news headlines. Indeed, for the victims involved, it may feel as if they are alone in the world. There are steps that can be taken to protect oneself from harm, but it may be difficult to get the abuser to abide by safety measures. One state alone reported an increased number of requests for protective orders by approximately 950. That brought the state's total for 2015 to an estimated 32,690 complaints.

That same state (New Jersey) reported that 52 victims died in 2016 as a result of domestic violence. Just four years ago, it was ranked 21st among all states, meaning that 20 other jurisdictions had more fatalities. In spite of the toll these violent acts have taken, close to 80 percent of these cases never end in a conviction as the victims are often unwilling to follow through on their complaints, usually out of fear for their safety.

It is estimated that a victim will return to the abuser six times before she or he is able to finally get free from the clutches of domestic violence. There are many other tactics that abusers use, including trespassing, burglary, stalking of victims and/or physical harm. In California, family law attorneys can provide information and compassionate guidance in order to help victims break free of the cycle of abuse to achieve a violence-free life for them and their children.
