Former Congressman Weiner's wife seeks divorce

Several years ago, Congressman Anthony Weiner was forced to resign after he was caught up in a sexting scandal. However, he recently entered a guilty plea to charges that he was sending explict messages to a minor, and, shortly that plea, his wife filed for divorce. While the couple do not reside in California, it is likely that many have heard about the former congressman's legal woes.

The new charges came to light after the then 15-year-old girl shared with a media source that she and the former politician had been exchanging illicit messages for several months. Weiner entered his guilty plea and purportedly agreed that he would not seek to appeal any prison term that fell within certain parameters. While he could face up to 10 years for the charges, he could also potentially avoid serving any time. He is required to register as a sex offender.

Huma Abedin, Weiner's estranged spouse, formally separated from her husband last year after the news of the latest scandal was reported. She has held a position as a political adviser to Hillary Clinton, and after the news of her husband's conduct, government agencies began investigating electronic communication between Clinton and Abedin. Clinton has blamed that investigation as one of the reasons her campaign for president was unsuccessful.

Abedin only recently filed her petition for divorce; there has been no further information forthcoming at this time, nor has Weiner publicly responded to his wife's decision to seek the dissolution. California families who are facing a divorce may understandably feel confused and uncertain as to how to proceed. Each spouse may seek the counsel of a family law attorney who can provide the support and expertise necessary during these often challenging and emotional times in order to settle the issues as equitably as possible.
