Program provides help for child victims of domestic violence

Statistics report that up to an estimated 10 million children may be exposed to violence in the home on a yearly basis. Studies show that these children are at a higher risk for developing serious emotional and behavioral problems due to witnessing domestic violence. Several years ago, an initiative was started in California that is now being replicated throughout the country to help reverse the damage inflicted.

This initiative was given the name Camp Hope, as it was the goal of the founder to start a program geared toward helping minors overcome the negative consequences that are often experienced by the victims. Studies have shown that these children experience emotional, mental and psychological trauma from witnessing the abuse in the home. Along with these serious problems, these children often suffer from a higher rate of illnesses and diseases as well as social anxiety and isolation troubles.

Along with the trauma that children experience from this serious social issue, these witnesses often learn to repeat the violence and show a tendency toward a higher risk of falling into criminal activity later in life. The program was set up to encourage campers to experience success in overcoming physical challenges while also providing a safe environment for the participants to learn effective coping mechanisms when facing difficult circumstances. Campers are exposed to lessons from historical figures who overcame challenging situations and are encouraged to find hope in everyday life.

The program is the first evidence-based approach to help young witnesses of domestic violence experience a positive outcome in spite of the negative home environment. While the program started here in California, it has now grown to include several other states in order to provide these vital services to as many children as possible. Adult victims of emotional, physical or mental abuse who may be unsure as to how to protect themselves and their children may seek the experienced assistance of a compassionate family law professional.
