Parents who homeschool may require family law assistance someday

When the recent story broke about the family who purportedly starved their 13 children and chained them to beds, many officials turned their scrutiny on families who choose to educate their children at home. Indeed, with the increased calls for reforms to home education regulations in many parts of the country, California homeschooling families may find themselves in need of an attorney who practices in family law. There are many who have stated their belief that parents who teach at home are attempting to hide abuse and neglect.

California already has various regulations in place to ensure that those parents who elect to teach their own children are held to certain standards. It is unfortunate that one family who allegedly engaged in horrific abuse has now drawn attention to well-intentioned parents who have chosen to educate their children in the manner they see fit. Parents across the country have been subjected to overreach by officials who have suggested that they are being negligent in providing proper care of their children.

One mother spoke about being accused of abusing her child and the fear such allegations caused her family. Some states are now considering other laws that will permit home inspections of personal hygiene supplies and other potential violations of parental rights. While the focus has been on searching for other families who may be using homeschooling as an excuse for abusing children, many public and private schools are struggling to protect students from becoming victims of sexual abuse by instructors and other support personnel.

When a California family finds itself facing false allegations of abuse or neglect, they may have feelings of doubt and panic, even when no abuse has occurred. The appearance of government officials on one's doorstep is not only a frightening prospect, it can cause harm to the family's reputation and standing in the community. Residents who find themselves facing false allegations may be best served by engaging the services of a compassionate family law attorney who can help obtain the best resolutions to these unsettling situations.
