Community urged to be aware of signs of domestic violence

Tragically, the news media frequently features a story that portrays the violent end of an abusive relationship. After another such deadly incident in California, community members were urged to become educated about the possible signs of domestic violence. There are several indicators that friends and family should be aware of that may encourage a victim to choose to seek help.

There are different types of abusive relationships. Not every victim has to be physically beaten in order to be considered abused. One woman who works for an outreach clinic stressed that having a strong support system can make a difference in the lives of potential victims. Being able to spot red flags and enabling a victim to talk openly about his or his situation may give him or her the encouragement he or she needs to leave an unsafe relationship.

Statistics point out that it may take victims multiple attempts before they permanently leave an abusive partner. When a victim does leave, that is the time when an abusive partner can become most volatile as he or she begins to lose control. Control is what an abuser strives for, be it through physical, sexual, financial or emotionally abusive and controlling behaviors. Victims are often socially isolated and given limited access to finances.

If one sees these types of behaviors in a potentially abusive relationship, then he or she may gently urge a victim to seek assistance from an outreach clinic. In addition, there are resources that can assist victims to learn about ways to protect themselves and their children. California residents who have been victims of domestic violence may seek the compassionate guidance of a family law attorney who can provide further information concerning legal measures that can help ensure their safety and that of their loved ones.
