Woman shares story to help other domestic violence victims

Abusive behavior in the home is nothing new and neither is the reluctance for others to talk about it. However, sharing stories of domestic violence may help other victims find the courage to make a change for themselves and their loved ones. This is a widespread social problem that affects countless families here in California.

Recently, one woman who survived a horrific attack from her ex-husband spoke about the horrors of living in an abusive relationship. She stated that it took many years until she was finally able to leave her abusive spouse permanently. This woman shared about the harm that such violence can cause emotionally, mentally and physically.

The victim attempted to seek refuge from her husband on more than one occasion. She said that her ex was so determined to prevent her from leaving that he would attempt to climb over the barriers that protected these safe houses. She related how it was a near-fatal knife attack that was the final straw for her to break free of the violence that had controlled her for so many years.

The woman shared her story of survival at a domestic violence awareness event sponsored by a local shelter. These shelters work to provide all victims of domestic abuse with a safe haven while they try to put their lives back together. While this woman's experience was extreme, not every situation involves serious bodily injury as domestic violence can also involve emotional, mental and financial control over victims. California residents who are in need of protection can seek advice from an experienced and compassionate attorney who can provide information regarding legal measures victims can take to ensure their safety and the safety of their loved ones.
